Raiders youngster faces axe over assault

Canberra second rower Joel Thompson is facing the axe after he was arrested by police for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend Danielle O'Brien late last month.

Raiders chief executive officer Don Furner stood Thompson down on Tuesday after the former junior Kangaroo faced court on a charge of assault.

Thompson is the latest in a growing line of Raiders players to face punishment for off-field indiscretions.

Last year the club sacked star halfback Todd Carney following a series of incidents.

Police say Thompson returned home in the early hours of January 22 after a drinking session with teammates. Ms O'Brien was staying at the house that night.

"Joel Thompson has been stood down today by the club and will not participate in any club activities until this matter has been finalised by the appropriate authorities," Furner said.

"Until this time he will not be training or playing with the club and a decision on his future with the Raiders will be made at a later date."

In a statement of facts tendered to the court and obtained by ABC Radio, police say that after an argument Thompson's girlfriend felt a smash to her right eye and also heard a loud crack as his hand connected with her face.

Thompson was granted bail on the condition he does not approach or intimidate Ms O'Brien.

The 2007 junior Kangaroo made his first grade debut last year.

Thompson will appear in court on February 25.

The saga caps a horror 24-hour run for the NRL which has seen five players, including Thompson, either facing police action or disciplinary measures from their clubs.

The sequence began when former Bulldog and Rooster Arana Taumata was sacked from his fourth club in as many years after a "physical altercation with another male".

Fellow rising stars Will Chambers and Dane Nielsen were out with Taumata and face disciplinary action from their club, but have escaped the sack.

Meanwhile, Titans winger Ben Jeffery appeared in court - with police alleging he was caught driving after drinking three beers, three bourbon and Cokes and two vodka lemonades.
