Tigers grab seventh straight NBL victory
Melbourne Tigers claimed their eighth straight NBL win with an emphatic 118-92 victory over the West Sydney Razorbacks.
The Tigers, who continue to chase Sydney for the top spot on the NBL ladder, used a withering third quarter to secure the win.
After leading by only five points at halftime, Melbourne outscored the Razorbacks 33-19 in the third quarter to take a match-winning lead for the final term.
NBL most valuable player favourite Chris Anstey was again dominant finishing with a game-high 30 points and nine rebounds.
Anstey scored 15 points in the decisive third quarter and he connected on 11-of-14 shots in the game.
Anstey was forced from the court early in the contest after receiving a poke in the eye but he had little trouble finding the basket upon his return.
Dave Thomas added 21 points for the Tigers and Stephen Hoare came off the bench to provide Melbourne with his best game of the season.
Hoare tallied 20 points on nine-for-10 shooting and added 10 rebounds and five assists in a brilliant all-round performance.
Melbourne coach Al Westover was pleased by his team's effort particularly after halftime.
"I was real pleased with the result," Westover said.
"Our defence in the second half was good and our intensity improved and that led to some easy baskets."
Clint Reed led the Razorbacks with a career-high 27 points and Graeme Dann added 15.
West Sydney has now lost 15 straight games and has won just four of its 27 matches this season.
Razorbacks coach Mark Watkins was putting on a brave face as his undermanned squad fought hard but could not compete with the Tigers' depth in the second half.
"We're playing hard and making the opposition play honest, hopefully we will reap the rewards when we get our full squad back next year," said Watkins.
West Sydney began the match well leading for much of the first quarter before a late Melbourne run saw the Tigers take a five-point edge to the break.
The teams continued to go basket for basket in the second quarter before Melbourne took control after halftime.
The Tigers shot an impressive 55 per cent from the field and limited West Sydney to 41 per cent shooting.
Melbourne now sit just behind Sydney on the NBL ladder with both teams having 21 wins.
The Kings remain slightly ahead of the Tigers as they have suffered only four losses compared to Melbourne's five.
