Pratt out of Shanghai Open
Nicole Pratt is out of the WTA's Shanghai Open, the Australian beaten in the first round by Maria Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain 6-4 6-3.
Three other matches were decided by injuries.
Fifth-seeded Jelena Dokic clinched a second-round spot after compatriot Jelena Jankovic succumbed to a shoulder problem with the score 7-6 4-4.
American Jill Craybas, ranked 75th worldwide, also made it into the second round after local favourite Zheng Jie retired with a leg cramp.
Zheng, one of two unranked Chinese players at the $US585,000 ($A881,000) event, left after a hard fight, with the score at 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 2-0.
Tathiana Garbin of Italy also left the court injured to hand victory to Chinese player Sun Tiantian at 7-5 2-3.
In other first-round play, Akiko Morigami of Japan easily eliminated Slovakian Martina Sucha 6-2 6-3 and Anca Barna of Germany swept away Cho Yoon-jeon 6-0 6-2.
It was Barna's second defeat of the South Korean player in two weeks.
