The sixth-seeded Australian beat American Jill Craybas 6-4 6-3 in a second round match on a night of upsets.

Unseeded Akiko Morigami of Japan downed fourth-seeded Conchita Martinez in the $US585,000 ($A885,000) WTA event.

Morigami, ranked 78th, beat Spain's 1994 Wimbledon champion 7-5 6-0.

Fifth-seeded Jelena Dokic of Serbia-Montenegro was upset by 64th ranked Russian Dinara Safina 6-1 6-4 while Anca Barna of Germany easily eliminated promising US teenager Ashley Harkleroad 6-0 6-4.
