Arthurs bows out in US Open
Wayne Arthurs' US Open ended in frustration with a first-round defeat at the hands of Australian Open runner-up Rainer Schuettler.
Arthurs went down 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-4 to the eighth-seeded German on an outside court at Flushing Meadows.
The veteran Australian's despair was apparent when he received a code violation for ball abuse after missing a break-back opportunity in the eighth game of the final set.
Arthurs, who has slipped to world No.81, had been confident of beating Schuettler for the third time in five matches to boost his flagging ranking but was unable to sustain his effort beyond an encouraging first set.
The 32-year-old left-hander is the only Australian from the men's draw in action on Wednesday.
Compatriot Nicole Pratt was due to meet American Jill Craybus later on Wednesday.
