Nicole Pratt bows out of US Open
Veteran Australian Nicole Pratt bowed out of the US Open with a respectable second-round loss to highly-rated Russian Anna Chakvetadze.
At 34 and in the twilight of her career, Pratt was not given a chance against Chakvetadze, but made the sixth seed work hard for her 6-3 6-4 win.
The 20-year-old Chakvetadze arrived at Flushing Meadows for the last grand slam of the year as the dark horse in the women's draw after snaring four titles on the WTA Tour in 2007.
But she had trouble adapting to Pratt's wily play, which included slowing the pace on the ball and frustrating her opponent into error.
Chakvetadze, though, eventually broke Pratt in the ninth game of the second set and calmly closed out the match after one hour and 12 minutes to set up a third-round clash with Indian Sania Mirza, the 26th seed.
