New Breakers import gets square eyes
The New Zealand Breakers new import Pierre Wooten has been watching a lot of television since arriving - and coach Andrej Lemanis couldn't be happier.
Wooten has been brought in after Brian Wethers injured his knee during the Breakers' 100-89 NBL loss to the Sydney Kings on Monday.
Wethers is out for the rest of the season, with the diagnosis of a fracture to the tibial plateau of his right knee meaning he could be on crutches for six weeks.
The Breakers this weekend face a testing NBL double-header at Cairns and Townsville, after suffering their seventh consecutive loss on Monday.
They languish in 11th place with only a remote chance of making the top-eight playoffs with 11 matches remaining.
But Lemanis is happy with the enthusiasm his new import is showing.
"He's been trawling through videos of our matches to familiarise himself with our plays and our personnel," Lemanis said.
"He's clicked into our programs pretty quickly, but it is early days and we won't be expecting any miracles from him this weekend."
Chiefly a point guard, but equally at home in the No.2 spot, Wooten is excited about being in New Zealand and is well aware of the Breakers' distant play-off hopes.
"These guys are going hard and won't be giving up on their goal to make the top eight," Wooten said.
"We're still in with a chance and I'm hoping to breathe some new life into the campaign."
