Woman attempted to blackmail Bulldogs
A woman attempted to blackmail the Canterbury Bulldogs League Club over the recent gang-rape allegations at a Coffs Harbour hotel, it was reported.
A report in The Australian newspaper said the mystery woman suggested a payment of $25,000 could end the claims against the players.
It has been alleged the caller indicated the "whole thing was getting out of hand and it could be settled for $25,000".
The woman did not identify herself or reveal whether she was known to the alleged victim, according to the newspaper.
The club's former football manager Gary Hughes took the call from the woman in February soon after the Coffs Harbour scandal broke.
Hughes confirmed he had been interviewed about the incident by police.
NSW police commissioner Ken Maroney said an investigation brief had been sent to the NSW Department of Public Prosecutions.
DPP solicitors were understood to have passed on the brief of evidence to director Nicholas Cowdery for his final decision on whether charges will be laid.
