Saints unlikely to be charged
A second high-profile rape investigation involving professional footballers was on the verge of being closed, again with no charges laid.
Police commented on a Channel Nine report that no action would be taken against Stephen Milne and Leigh Montagna, from AFL club St Kilda.
"We have not formally been notified but have been advised verbally that it is unlikely charges will proceed against two St Kilda AFL players," a police spokesman said.
Responding to the developments, Saints legal director Ross Levin said: "Obviously we're keenly awaiting the outcome, hopefully we'll hear something tomorrow.
"Neither the club, the players nor their lawyers have had any comment either way from the police or the Office of Public Prosecutions."
Tonight's developments came a week after New South Wales police announced no charges would be laid over a 20-year-old woman's allegations that six players from NRL club the Bulldogs had gang-raped her.
On March 16, the Saints confirmed police were investigating sex allegations against Milne and Montagna.
The following day, police confirmed the two players were the subject of a rape investigation.
The allegations related to events after the club's annual family day and also involved two women.
While the two players are yet to comment, St Kilda has always strongly denied the allegations.
