Chakvetadze wins title in Hobart
Top seed Anna Chakvetadze completed an ideal preparation for next week's Australian Open after claiming her third WTA tour title at the Hobart International.
World No.13 Chakvetadze triumphed 6-3 7-6 (7-3) against fellow Russian teenager Vasilia Bardina in the final of the tournament, but will have little time to celebrate before jetting to Melbourne for next week's grand slam.
"I have a flight at six in the morning tomorrow, so probably I'll sleep all day and then have a practice on Sunday," Chakvetadze said after adding Hobart to her 2006 titles from Guangzhou and her hometown of Moscow.
"When you win tournament it's a pleasure. It's tier IV but it's a win and it feels good."
The 19-year-old had come into the match under an injury cloud after pulling a stomach muscle in her semi-final win the previous night.
But despite showing some signs of discomfort midway through the first set, Chakvetadze said she was not bothered by the problem.
"I feel good, I fell okay, almost 100 per cent. It didn't bother me at all."
The heavy trophy provided Chakvetadze with her biggest concern of the night as she struggled to hold aloft her prize.
"It was so heavy. But I was very happy."
Having won seven straight matches in Hobart to progress through qualifying and into her maiden WTA tour final, world No.70 Bardina admitted fatigue got the best of her in the final.
"I tried to play well, but I was so tired," Bardina said.
"Maybe she was better today and she played well.
"I'm glad that it's my highest result and hopefully not my last (final) for the future."
Bardina had the chance to level the match at one-set all, but failed to serve out the second set while leading 5-4.
Chakvetadze capitalised to win the tie-break and pocket the $US170,000 ($A217,990) prizemoney to take her career earnings over the $US1 million ($A1.28 million) mark.
Seeded 12th for the Australian Open, Chakvetadze will meet a familiar face to open her third Melbourne Park campaign next week after being drawn against Hobart semi-finalist Sybille Bammer for the first round.
Austrian Bammer claimed the biggest win of her career this week when she defeated Serena Williams in the quarter-finals, only to capitulate in straight sets against Bardina in the semis.
Bardina was handed no favours for her Australian Open debut after being drawn to play fourth seed Kim Clijsters in the first round.
