Phelps on track to make Wigan debut
Former Bulldogs fullback Cameron Phelps could make his debut with his new English club Wigan Warriors this weekend.
The 23-year-old, who played his final game for the Bulldogs against Cronulla on Monday, is due to arrive in England.
Wigan chairman Ian Lenagan said Phelps had been registered to compete in the Carnegie Challenge Cup, so could make his debut for the Warriors this Saturday at Leeds.
"We have had our eye on Cameron for a number of months as an inexpensive young player with speed and agility who can add competition for places in our back line this year," Lenagan said in a statement.
"Hopefully, his performances this season with Wigan can then justify a contract extension.
"We would like to thank Canterbury for agreeing to release Cameron early."
Phelps, who has signed a contract for the remainder of the 2008 season with the option to extend into 2009, said he was "excited" to be joining Wigan.
"When I learned of the Warriors interest, it was an opportunity I just had to take," he said.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Bulldogs but this is a real chance for me to prove my ability in Super League.
"I have agreed terms for the remainder of this season and its up to me to impress and earn the chance to extend my stay at Wigan."
Phelps made his debut for the Bulldogs in 2005 and has played 39 first team games, scoring 12 tries.
