Broncos backed for NRL grand final swap
The Queensland government has thrown its weight behind the Brisbane Broncos' campaign to move the NRL grand final from Sunday night to Saturday afternoon.
An "e-petition" has been launched by the Broncos on the state government's website in a bid to dump the night NRL season decider.
Broncos boss Bruno Cullen admitted the 2006 AFL grand final - held on a Saturday afternoon - was a better spectacle than Brisbane's 15-8 NRL win over Melbourne because it was more family friendly.
"I didn't cringe but I felt slightly embarrassed watching it (AFL final) on the Saturday knowing ours was going to be dark and gloomy," Cullen told ABC Radio.
"I didn't see it (NRL final) on the day because I was involved with the players during the game but on returning home and watching it on TV, I just thought it fell so far short because it didn't have that bright and colourful daylight atmosphere."
Cullen believed the e-petition needed up to 50,000 votes to make the NRL take notice.
"To try and make some impact you'd want it in the tens of thousands - you know 40 or 50,000 probably and even more," he said.
"And it's a little bit difficult too I might add, it's on the government website and you have to be able to follow the prompts and get to it.
"But I think if people are passionate enough about it, if we get the message out and let people know it's there, we'll certainly use it."
Cullen said the e-petition has already attracted "a few hundred votes".
