Bronco fans opt to stay home
Many Brisbane Broncos fans are opting to stay at home, with flights to Melbourne in short supply and accommodation prices being jacked up to take advantage of a busy sporting weekend.
The Broncos-Storm NRL preliminary final was due to be played on Friday night but was switched to Saturday - starting only hours after the end of the AFL grand final - because Melbourne's Etihad Stadium had been pre-booked for the VFL grand final.
Broncos Supporters Club spokeswoman Lyn Martin said many fans were opting to stay at home and watch the match on television.
"I think at the moment everybody has tried various airlines ... and they are all having so much difficulty a lot of people have given up," she told AAP.
"We had a look at coaches, but the logistics of it were just too much and the cost of it was exorbitant."
One-way flights from Brisbane to Melbourne on Saturday were being advertised online from between $317 and $627 this week, but few seats were available.
Return flights on Sunday were selling for between $266 and $627.
A spokeswoman for online agency Wotif.com said bookings were higher than normal this weekend with 41 per cent of properties in the Melbourne CBD sold out for Friday night and 48 per cent sold out on Saturday.
But she said accommodation was still available.
Ms Martin said accommodation could still be found but prices were higher than normal.
"They are at least half as much again - for one man, where he stays normally at $120 it is $190 for the night," she said.
"Being AFL grand final they can put their own prices on places.
"Most of the people I know say, `It would mean we would have to sell our children,' and they've looked at their kids and said, `No, we'd better not'."
Ms Martin said while lounge rooms would be a popular venue to watch the match, she knew of a group of fans who plan to take a break during a winery tour of the Stanthorpe area, southwest of Brisbane, to watch the match.
She said the timing of future football matches should be looked at.
But she didn't believe it would affect the Broncos' chances of winning.
"I think the Broncos are used to playing in front of opposition home crowds anyway," she said.
"If there's 25,000 people there at least 5,000 will be Broncos supporters - those that go will, I'm hoping, will be quite vocal.
"The boys know they have the support of people back in Brisbane.
"I'm sure we'll be making the trip to Sydney next weekend."
The winner of the Broncos-Storm battle will face off in the NRL grand final in Sydney against the winner of the Parramatta Eels-Bulldogs preliminary final.
