Maloney sets scoring record
Warriors halfback James Maloney stands to win plenty of beers in years to come after his big day out against the Brisbane Broncos in just his seventh NRL appearance on Sunday.
Maloney's 28-point haul is the most by any player against Brisbane since they entered the premiership in 1988 and could become a trivia question in the future.
Asked what he would have said had someone told him he'd score so many points against the Broncos on a steamy Sunday afternoon in front of 32,388 fans he said: "I'd tell them they were kidding themselves".
"I was pretty happy to get a few meat pies (tries)".
The 23 year-old from Orange in western NSW, who grew up on the central coast, celebrated his move to halfback for injured No.7 Brett Seymour with three tries and eight goals.
His points haul eclipsed the previous best of 26 points racked up by Parramatta's Krisnan Inu in 2007.
Titans centre Joseph Tomane scored 24 points against Brisbane when he was playing for Melbourne last year while champion Cowboys half Johnathan Thurston scored three tries and six goals against the Broncos in 2006.
Not even the great Andrew Johns (20 points twice) notched more points than Maloney in all his games against Brisbane.
Maloney's path to the NRL started in the NSW Cup with North Sydney.
He then spent two seasons trying to crack the first grade scene at Parramatta before playing four games for Melbourne last year when his manager Wayne Beavis helped him find a three-year contract with the Warriors.
"It was a big move for me to make but I really love the guys and the place and I'm really enjoying my footy," he said.
The 23-year-old playmaker doesn't care where he plays in the No.7 or No.6 when Seymour returns from injury.
"It doesn't really matter, they're pretty similar these days," he said.
"I'll take any jersey I can get and do the best I can."
Warriors coach Ivan Henjak, whose club record points haul Maloney equalled, was pleased with Maloney's effort at halfback.
"There was a lot of pressure on him when Brett Seymour was injured," said Cleary.
"He's been looking for a chance to get a crack at the NRL and he is playing very well.
Before today's game, Wallace had two points beside his name in the NRL.
