Broncos scratching for players
Brisbane could be scratching to field a side for Saturday's NRL clash against the Wests Tigers with star players Darren Lockyer, Shane Webcke and Shaun Berrigan battling injuries and skipper Gorden Tallis charged with a head slam.
The Broncos were unable to provide medical updates on the injured trio after visits to specialists for assessments.
Webcke's return from injury was cut short after he felt his calf muscle tighten during Sunday's 46-18 loss to the Bulldogs.
Berrigan battled on bravely in the second half with a shoulder injury while Lockyer suffered rib cartilage damage late in the game which left him in considerable pain.
Webcke will not play the Tigers.
It's likely both Lockyer and Berrigan will get the afternoon off a month out from the finals.
If that's the case, coach Wayne Bennett could again send an S-O-S to son-in-law Ben Ikin.
Boom youngster Berrick Barnes may also get a surprise call-up from Brisbane's feeder club Toowoomba, which is desperate to win this weekend to make the Queensland Cup finals.
Bennett could swing Tonie Carroll back into the centres, start Carl Webb in the front row and recall former international Brad Meyers, who starred for the Clydesdales at the weekend.
Tallis's place in the side was also thrown into doubt when he was charged with contrary conduct for an alleged head slam on the Bulldogs' Hazem El Masri at the weekend.
