Ten-man Reds hold Roar to scoreless draw

Ten-man Adelaide have held on to share the A-League spoils with Queensland in an entertaining 0-0 draw at Suncorp Stadium.

United striker Shengqing Qu received a straight red card just before the hour mark for a deliberate head butt on Roar captain Chad Gibson as the pair tussled in full view of the referee in Adelaide's penalty area.

The Chinese striker now misses the Adelaide's Labour Day clash with Sydney at Hindmarsh Stadium at the very least and could be out a further two games if the match review committee so decides.

Fellow striker Fernando also failed to see out the full 90 minutes, replaced at half-time by Mike Valkanis after falling awkwardly in the first term.

Qu's dismissal denied fans a chance to see both A-League Chinese imports on the pitch at the same time with Yuning Zhang only thrown into the fray with 20 minutes to play.

That was still enough time to appreciate more of Zhang's impressive technique although he spurned a string of late chances to score his maiden Queensland goal.

In stoppage time, he came closest when Simon Lynch's cross was parried agonisingly wide of his desperate slide.

Lynch also impressed with a host of clear-cut chances of his own.

In the build-up to the clash, the renewal of last season's feud between coaches Miron Bleiberg and John Kosmina shared joint-billing with the anticipated battle between Qu and Zhang.

The pair were former domestic and international team-mates as well as close friends but the Roar striker had to settle for a place on the bench for the second successive match.

Qu wasted a golden opportunity to open the scoring for the visitors when he headed the dangerous Greg Owens' cross narrowly over.

That proved to be a rare foray forward in a match Queensland dominated with forward pairing Lynch and Reinaldo demonstrating why Zhang is not an automatic starter.

Lynch spurned a hat-trick of chances in the first-half alone, the best when a bobbling ball in Adelaide territory landed at his feet in front of goal - only for goalkeeper Robert Bajic to save with his legs.

On the half-hour, Robert Cornthwaite was fortunate to escape at least a booking when he clumsily bought down Reinaldo on the edge of the box with the Brazilian clean through.

However, it was Lynch who received the booking, for manhandling referee Matthew Breeze - who last weekend dismissed Sydney's Steve Corica for dissent - after the official had waved aside Queensland appeals.

Queensland threw men forward following Qu's dismissal in the hunt for a first-ever win over Adelaide but found Bajic in formidable form.
