Jets and Roar draw 1-1 in Newcastle

The Newcastle Jets have recovered from an early Queensland Roar goal to salvage a 1-1 draw in an entertaining A-League match at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

Roar striker Robbie Kruse stunned the 12,326-strong crowd when he put the visitors in front after just 30 seconds.

But the Jets crawled their way back and scored in the first minute of the second half through a penalty to Joel Griffiths.

Jets goalkeeper Ante Covic saved the day for Newcastle when he stopped a penalty from former Socceroos skipper Craig Moore in the second half to ensure a point for the home side.

The draw continues the Jets' unbeaten home record this season and, temporarily at least, maintains second spot on the A-League ladder.

The Roar opened the scoring when midfielder Zullo found Kruse inside the box.

The 20-year-old striker muffed his first shot, but made no mistake with the second effort, slotting it low past Covic.

In a frantic opening half hour, Queensland followed up their perfect start with relentless pressure on the ball - seemingly unsettling the home side who were unable to find any sort of rhythm.

Both Zullo and Kruse were constant threats for Queensland, their pace causing headaches for a rattled Newcastle defence.

Although the Jets did go close after 30 minutes through a close-range header by Troy Hearfield and again through Griffiths in the 43rd, it was the Roar making the running.

Zullo in particular was dangerous, creating numerous opportunities for team-mates with his energetic play but his night was quickly soured one minute into the second half when he brought down Hearfield and Griffiths converted from the spot.

Queensland had a chance to take the lead in the 66th minute when Kruse drew a penalty on Jets defender Stephen Laybutt, but Moore had his firm shot brilliantly saved by Covic low to his left.

James Holland, who scored on debut for the Jets last week, had an opportunity to win it for Newcastle in the final minute but his shot was blocked in a desperate effort by Sasa Ognenovski.

Jets coach Gary Van Egmond was left to lament his side's failure to convert a slew of possession into goals after the match.

"I suppose you can look at it both ways," he said.

"Probably possession-wise, I don't know what the stat is but I'd suggest we probably had most of the ball and mostly in their half.

"Credit to Queensland, we couldn't break them down very easily, (they were) well marshalled with Craig Moore at the back and then they obviously will feel a little bit unfortunate with the result (in) that they missed the penalty at the end."

Queensland coach Frank Farina was left ruing his skipper's penalty miss, but conceded that he was happy to come away from Newcastle with a point for the second time this season.

"Looking at the game it was most probably a fair result but I think (if) the penalty goes in, it would be all over, well not all over but we most probably would have held on," Farina said.
