Suncorp rules out return to 'Lang Park'
Brisbane's marquee sporting arena will continue to be known as Suncorp Stadium until 2012 with a return to its traditional moniker, Lang Park, ruled out.
Once a graveyard, 'Lang Park' appears to be another name laid to rest at the Milton site of the 52,500-capacity stadium which is home to the Brisbane Broncos, Queensland Reds and Brisbane Roar.
Suncorp has no plans to resurrect the traditional title after Wednesday, exercising an option to extend their deal as naming-rights sponsor of the ground for a further two years.
The insurance and banking group's naming-rights association with the rectangular stadium began in 1994 and continued through the field's last major redevelopment in 2003.
Suncorp banking group executive David Foster acknowledged the Lang Park history but denied the company would return to the iconic name.
"It's part of its legacy," Foster said. "But obviously being a naming sponsor has certain benefits to us.
"Being Suncorp Stadium allows us to make that contribution to make sure it's a world-class stadium and people can come and enjoy sport here.
"I think it's got a great identity as it stands today."
As part of the naming-rights extension deal between Suncorp and the Queensland government, Wallabies coach Robbie Deans was announced as a stadium ambassador.
Deans said Suncorp Stadium was among his players' most popular venues around the world.
