Spiteri delivers for Marconi
Marconi striker Joe Spiteri took his team from easybeat to the top of the national soccer league when his quick-thinking goal led to a 2-1 win over Sydney Olympic at Jubilee Oval on Sunday.
Last season, Marconi had to struggle to avoid the wooden spoon but it now remains unbeaten after five rounds.
Marconi scored at the best times of the match, Shane Webb heading the first in the eighth minute and Spiteri adding the second 10 minutes from fulltime.
With Olympic throwing everything into attack in the second half and wasting most of their chances, smart thinking by Spiteri made the points safe for Marconi.
The ball was cleared from a corner to midfield where Todd Brodie lobbed it back over the defence and into empty space in the penalty area.
Spiteri dashed forward while the defenders were looking for an offside call and placed his shot past the helpless keeper.
"Marconi had four chances, we had 15 and 74 per cent of the game and should not have lost," Olympic coach Peter Papanikitas said.
"I'll need to evaluate my goalkeeper after his two blunders. Webb got his head to the ball but the keeper punched it in."
Marconi coach Jean-Paul de Marigny was quietly satisfied with his side and praised Spiteri for always being alert for a goal scoring chance.
"We worked hard to get a competitive squad together after the last few lean seasons and I've had to change the culture of defeatism," he said.
