Sharks into NSL grand final
A penalty goal, heroic defence and a bit of luck has helped Olympic into consecutive national soccer league grand finals.
The Sharks recorded an emotional 3-1 win over Parramatta Power at Toyota Park on Sunday night and now play Perth Glory in the grand final at Subiaco Oval next Sunday.
In Adelaide, Adelaide City thumped Northern Spirit 6-0 at Hindmarsh Stadium but needed the Sharks to draw or lose to have a chance of making the decider.
So often the team that creates a swag of opportunities only to fail in front of goal, Olympic instead made the most of its limited chances to register a stirring win.
Two second half efforts by the NSL's highest paid striker Ante Milicic secured the result but it was Olympic's dogged defence which salvaged the night.
After trailing 1-0 after just nine minutes, the Sharks looked in trouble with Parramatta sniffing an upset and an unlikely crack at the title.
But inspired play by keeper Clint Bolton and some terrific last minute clean up jobs by the back four ensured the Sharks stayed in the match.
The 35th minute introduction of Joel Porter proved vital for the home side who started the crunch match in second gear.
Porter, who'd replaced Wayne Srhoj in the midfield, supplied a spectacular cross on the left with just his second touch of the ball.
Jeromy Harris still had plenty to do but the rugged forward positioned himself beautifully on the edge of the six-yard box to head through the equaliser after 36 minutes.
