Victoria misses NSL finals spot
Victoria will be without a finalist for the first time in National Soccer League history after Parramatta tonight clinched its first top six finish.
A 75th minute own goal from United's Dave Barrett tonight earned the Power a 1-0 away win over local rival Sydney United and ensured Parramatta's first finals appearance in its fourth season.
The result shut the finals door on seventh placed South Melbourne which needed Parramatta to drop both of its last two games, but the Power prevailed tonight despite having striker Pablo Cardozo sent off just before halftime.
The win lifted Parramatta three places to third.
The composition of the top six for the new Championship Series was completed tonight after Adelaide City and Northern Spirit sealed their finals spots with home wins last Friday.
Adelaide defeated Wollongong 2-1 and Northern Spirit recorded the same scoreline in its Sydney derby against Marconi which now looks almost certain to collect the wooden spoon for the first time in its history.
While NSW clubs make up four of the top six, Perth is in the box seat to finish NSL Premier after the 26 round regular season.
Perth's 3-1 home victory over Melbourne Knights last Saturday lifted it to first, two points above Olympic Sharks which had the bye.
A draw in next weekend's final round fixture away to Marconi should secure top spot for Perth above the Sharks who host Adelaide as Olympic has a eight goal inferior goal difference to the Glory.
In Perth on Saturday night, goals inside the first 15 minutes to Matt Horsley and skipper Bobby Despotovski got Glory off to a flying start.
