Glory wins NSL grand final 2-0
Perth Glory's reputation as big game failures bit the dust as the home side sank the Olympic Sharks 2-0 in the NSL grand final at Subiaco Oval.
For years considered the benchmark club in the NSL - both on and off the pitch - the Glory had struggled when it came to grand finals, losing two of the past three deciders on home turf.
But on Sunday they shrugged off the chokers tag, scoring a goal in each half to secure the win.
"I'm glad that the monkey is off our back because that monkey was starting to become a gorilla," said Glory captain Bobby Despotovski.
"We are not chokers anymore, we are the champions."
Defender Jamie Harnwell bagged the first goal after 30 minutes with veteran striker Damian Mori sealing the result for the home side in the 86th minute.
But in keeping with the forgettable NSL season it was far from being a memorable game.
The poor matches of Olympic's Troy Halpin, who'd struggled with a groin injury before the match, and Hiro Ishida left the Sharks with few options in the midfield.
Olympic coach Lee Sterrey conceded too many players weren't on their games.
"We had probably two or three crucial players play poorly and you can't afford that when you come here," he said.
