Heron helps Warriors to 5-305 at stumps
An impressive first class debut from opener Clint Heron has finally given Western Australia something to cheer about on day one of its Pura Cup clash with Tasmania at the WACA Ground.
Heron was dismissed for 84 as the Warriors managed 5-305 at stumps in their first innings in a must-win match against the Tigers.
The 26-year-old shared a 145-run fourth wicket stand with Shaun Marsh (94) to rescue the home side from a precarious 3-48.
Ryan Campbell (76no) and David Bandy (19no) will resume Monday.
The Warriors have had a disastrous start to the 2005-06 season on and off the pitch.
Three straight outright Pura Cup defeats and three losses from five ING Cup games is hardly the ideal start to a season.
The knock was a vast improvement on WA's previous two first innings at home this year - 142 on a grassy top against Victoria and 176 against NSW.
Off the field, the WACA is currently investigating paceman Brad Williams' withdrawal from Friday's ING Cup loss to Tasmania.
Williams pulled out of the match to "contemplate his future" after being dropped for the Pura Cup match.
But there are now claims Williams informed team officials he was suffering a hamstring problem, a claim being investigated.
