Victoria eyes Pura Cup victory
Victoria is eying a miraculous Pura Cup victory after golden-boy skipper Cameron White broke through with a memorable century against Queensland on Tuesday.
A relieved White claimed the monkey was off his back after scoring an unbeaten 105 off 163 balls to give the Vics an unlikely upper hand at stumps on day three after being forced to follow-on on Monday.
The defending champions, who entered the Cup final replay in last place with only six points, will resume at the Gabba at 6-472, holding an overall lead of 289 runs.
Only three sides in 112 seasons of interstate cricket have won after following on, but the Vics believe they can go all the way after keeping the Bulls in the field for two straight days.
White and a watchful Ian Harvey (71 not out off 172) continued the amazing turnaround, sparked by opener Jason Arnberger's stoic 152, with an unbeaten 179-run stand.
The pair are only eight runs away from the best-ever seventh-wicket stand in Victorian history - 187 set by Percy McAlister and Alf Murray 106 years ago against New Zealand.
They are poised to break it as White indicated the Bushrangers would bat for up to an extra hour to give themselves 80-plus overs to bowl the Bulls out on a good wicket.
"The wicket's cracking up a bit ... and if we bowl really well tomorrow there's no reason we can't take 10 wickets," he said.
The blond-haired 21-year-old, in his 32nd first-class match, brought up the ton in sterling manner by belting fellow Indian Test tourist Nathan Hauritz for four and a massive six over long-on off successive balls three overs before stumps.
"It's a bit of a monkey off my back personally but more importantly we're 280 runs in front," said White, under pressure for his unsuccessful season as captain and modest batting record (average 24.58).
