Katich extends hot run as Waugh run out
Simon Katich will be hoping he comes under consideration for the Australian one-day cricket side this summer.
Steve Waugh will be praying there are no more run outs.
The NSW captain was involved up in another mid-pitch bungle on day three of the Pura Cup match against Victoria at Newcastle No.1 Sports Ground - when Katich stole the show with a scintillating 126 off 159 balls - but this time the former Test skipper was the victim.
Victoria was 0-3 at stumps, chasing an unlikely 455 runs for victory.
With Dominic Thornely facing Victorian captain Cameron White on 99, Waugh set off for a quick single which the NSW allrounder showed no interest in. Waugh turned on his heels and bolted back to the bowlers' end but a direct hit from David Hussey caught him short of the crease, according to the raised finger of umpire Nick Fowler.
Waugh disagreed with the decision, hesitating before returning to the pavilion, shaking his head as boos rung over the ground. A crowd of 5,638 Novocastrians had come to watch him make more than his 30.
In Tests, Waugh has been dismissed in only three of the 27 run outs he's been party to. Criticism of his role in the run out of Damien Martyn in the Gabba Test against India this summer made his blood boil.
Katich is breathtaking right now.
So are his figures.
He has 772 runs from five Pura Cup games at an average of 111.28. He has 285 runs from four one-day ING Cup games at 95. He has 405 runs from five Tests at 67.5 highlighted by last week's maiden ton against India.
