Queensland accused of disrespecting Vic
Queensland was accused of disrespecting Pura Cup champions Victoria after the Bushrangers completed a modern-day cricketing miracle to revive their spluttering season at the Gabba.
Victorian coach Greg Shipperd took a swipe at Bulls skipper Jimmy Maher for "underestimating" the Bushrangers by over-confidently enforcing a mid-match follow-on after bowling them out for 188.
The contentious decision was the pivotal moment in the Cup final replay as the defending champions resurrected their season with a second-innings fightback of 8(dec)-508 to set up a 156-run win.
The astonishing victory, completed when Queensland was rolled for 169 in two sessions, lifted the visitors off the bottom of the table and into fourth place with 12 points - 10 behind the top-placed Bulls.
"We had to find a way back into the game, it was graciously given to us by the opposition captain and we took full advantage of it," Shipperd said of the follow-on call midway through a hot second day.
"A couple of times in the last couple of seasons I think Queensland have seriously underestimated, or (not) respected, our ability to play at the level that we have.
"In the last couple of years, Victoria have well and truly deserved to be respected, probably more than they are by the opposition.
"I think last year when they scored 600 down at the Junction Oval and expected us to roll over, it was another indication of that sort of thinking."
Maher took umbrage at the suggestion, feeling Shipperd should concentrate on attributing the turnaround to chanceless knocks by man-of-the-match Jason Arnberger (152), skipper Cameron White (119) and Ian Harvey (90 not out).
"I'm sorry if it's disrespectful for enforcing the follow-on," he said.
