Australia's World Boxing Council interim super middleweight champion Danny Green recovered from the first knock-down of his professional career to stop Argentinian Omar Gonzales in the fifth round of a non-title bout in Sydney.

Fighting for the first time in six months, the longest break of his career, Green received a rude shock in the second round.

He was felled with a crisp right hand to the head with just over a minute of the round remaining.

Gonzales, 32, threw the first few jabs of the fight and tried to make the early pace, but Green started to find the range with both his jabs and power punches in the final minute of the round.

The second appeared to be following a similar pattern and Green landed a jolting left before Gonzales landed the knock-down blow.

Green bounced quickly back to his feet and did not appear to be hurt.

Gonzales couldn't capitalise on the knock-down and Green reasserted himself over the following rounds, dictating terms and backing up the Argentinian.

A cut developed over Gonzales' right eye in the fifth round and Dr Lou Lewis ruled it was too severe for the fight to continue.

The disappointed Argentinian made it clear he thought the fight should not have been stopped.

At the time, Green led by one and three points on two of the score cards and was level on the third.
