Mundine gets second shot at world belt
Anthony Mundine is expected to announce on Wednesday details of his Super middleweight boxing world title shot against Antwun Echols.
Mundine's management has agreed terms with the American to fight for the World Boxing Association super middleweight title in Australia.
Echols is the number one contender and Mundine number two for the title which is technically vacant because the WBA recently elevated Germany's Sven Ottke to the status of Super champion when he added the WBA title to the International Boxing Federation championship he already held.
A midday press conference has been called for the Sydney Entertainment Centre, a potential venue for the fight and the arena in which Mundine made his professional debut in 2000.
Melbourne and Indonesia were other venues under consideration for the fight which is likely to occur around August after Echols was not seriously injured by a stray bullet which clipped his arm in a recent incident in the United States.
It will be 28-year-old Mundine's second world title shot after he suffered his only professional loss in December 2001 when he was knocked out by Ottke.
meanwhile, Mundine's arch rival Danny Green is considering his options after moving a step closer to a world title bout of his own following his fifth round stoppage of old amateur adversary Jason Delisle last night.
Trainer Jeff Fenech said he was looking at the possibility of matching Green against Commonwealth super middleweight champion Andre Thysse.
Green had originally planned to fight Thysse earlier this year, but the South African opted instead to fight for the Commonwealth title, which he took from Englishman David Starie.
Ironically, Starie was offered the opportunity to fight Ottke for his titles when Green knocked back an invitation to fight the German because of the short notice and his commitment to fight Delisle.
