Taylor wins world title with KO
Shannan Taylor became Australia's latest world boxing champion with a thundering second-round knock out of Thailand's Sakda Sorpakdi.
Taylor fulfilled a life-long quest by winning the vacant World Boxing Federation super middleweight crown in front of more than 1500 fans at Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast.
Taylor ended the bout with a sharp right hand upper cut which knocked the outclassed Sorpkadi to the canvas.
The world title win was a warm-up for Taylor's scheduled challenge next month for the more coveted IBF title in the US.
"I've got the hunger back," said Taylor. "The fight in the US will be huge."
Taylor put the Thai boxer on the canvas in the first round with two sharp rights.
In the second a combination put Sorpakdi to his knees before the knockout ended the fight.
It was Taylor's biggest victory since cocaine addiction almost ended his life three years ago.
Taylor will fight the IBF junior middleweight champion Kassim Ouma in Las Vegas on January 29.
Taylor's only previous world title fight was in 2001, when he was stopped by World Boxing Council welterweight champion Shane Mosely.
