Mundine wins in third round
Anthony Mundine charged towards another world title tilt with a brutal third round stoppage win over Australian super middleweight boxing champion Juane Dowling.
Mundine's speed, power and class proved too potent a combination for the gritty Queenslander.
Dowling absorbed tremendous punishment in the third round and did wonderfully well to get up after being poleaxed by a huge right hand.
The local fighter just beat the count, but a few more punches sent him reeling groggily into the ropes and referee Phil Austin halted the bout with 41 seconds of the round remaining.
In the first two rounds, Mundine used his superior hand speed to land first with jabs and power punches, but Dowling still pushed forward at every opportunity.
Although he occasionally caught Mundine, he wasn't able to land anything substantial or hurtful enough to keep the Sydney fighter at bay.
After two rounds, Mundine was leading 20-18 on two scorecards and 20-19 on the third.
Wednesday night's victory improved the 29-year-old former rugby league star's record to 22 wins (17 KOs) and two losses.
It was Dowling's third loss in 15 fights, but he didn't surrender his Australian title as the match was made over the super middleweight limit.
After pummeling the gallant Queenslander, Mundine was looking forward to fighting for the World Boxing Association super middleweight title he lost to Puerto Rican Manny Siaca in Sydney last May.
