Scud ends form slump at Wimbledon
Mark Philippoussis finally snapped the worst form slump in his life to record his first win since January with a convincing straight sets victory in the opening round at Wimbledon.
The 11th seed overpowered Belgian qualifier Christophe Rochus 6-3 6-4 6-2 after losing in the opening round of his last seven tournaments.
Philippoussis had to look back as far as the Australian Open for his last win in an ATP tour event but he was a rejuvenated player on the grass at the All England Club where he made the final last year.
He fired down 22 aces as he sped through the match in 91 minutes, watched by his pop star girlfriend Delta Goodrem at Court Three.
Philippoussis said he felt mentally capable of winning and there was no tournament that inspired him like Wimbledon.
"There's no other tournament, I must say, that definitely gives me those butterflies in my stomach before the match," he said.
"I'm not really wanting to eat much before the match.
"(I'm) a little nervous but I think it's good nerves.
"It's definitely a positive sign for me."
After slipping from world No.9 to 19, the Victorian reached a new low when he lost to world No.866 Ian Flanagan in the first round at the Queen's Club tournament two weeks ago.
