Scud through to second round
Mark Philippoussis eased into the second round of the US Open with a straight-sets victory over Serbian qualifier Janko Tipsarevic.
Australia's Wimbledon finalist was in control virtually from start to finish, winning 6-2 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 on a hot and humid third day of the championships at Flushing Meadows.
He trailed 3-0 in the third set but won six of the next seven games to close out the match in one hour, 51 minutes.
Philippoussis, the tournament's 20th seed, will meet either Mikhail Youzhny or Anthony Dupuis in his next match.
Fellow Australians Scott Draper and Alicia Molik are in action later.
Draper opens his campaign against seventh seed Carlos Moya and Molik will play 12th seed Conchita Martinez for a berth in the third round.
