Scud riding high in Shanghai
Australia's Mark Philippoussis shrugged off his Davis Cup slump to move into the second round of the $US380,000 ($A563,800) ATP tournament with a 6-4 7-6 (7-2) victory over Sweden's Andreas Vinciguerra here on Wednesday.
Although Australia defeated Switzerland in their Davis Cup semi-final, Philippoussis played just one singles and lost easily in straight sets to his Wimbledon conqueror Roger Federer.
However, he was a lot more comfortable getting rid of the Swede's challenge to set up a second round meeting against American Jeff Salzenstein as he seeks his first tournament win since 2001.
"I only arrived on Tuesday so I'm still getting used to it here that's why I'm also playing doubles, to get some more practice," said the third seed.
Fellow Davis Cup member Wayne Arthurs, victorious with Todd Woodbridge in the doubles against Switzerland, also won his match ousting countryman Peter Luczak 5-7 6-4 6-2.
Top seed Jiri Novak became the first player to advance into the quarter-finals when the Czech player rallied back after dropping a first set tie-break to defeat American Robert Kendrick in three sets, 6-7 (3-7) 6-1 6-2.
Novak's quarterfinal opponent will be two-time Shanghai champion Magnus Norman, who won 7-5 7-6 (7-5) against Spain's Fernando Verdasco.
Second seed Martin Verkerk of the Netherlands moved into the second round with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Chinese wild card Shao Xuan Zeng.
