Scud on course for Wimbledon rematch
Mark Philippoussis remained on course for a Wimbledon final rematch with Roger Federer after advancing impressively to the US Open third round at Flushing Meadows.
Philippoussis thumped unseeded Frenchman Anthony Dupuis 6-2 6-3 6-4 to advance to the last 32 in New York for the first time since reaching the 1998 final.
He will next play 13th seed David Nalbandian after Argentina's 2002 Wimbledon runner-up survived a gruelling five-setter against Finnish left-hander Jarko Nieminen.
Nalbandian prevailed 5-7 6-3 6-1 4-6 7-6 (7-3) in an energy-sapping encounter lasting more than three hours.
Philippoussis, who was on court for less than two hours and is scheduled to meet Federer in the round of 16.
The second-seeded Swiss shouldn't have too many problems progressing one step closer when he plays world No.94 Jean-Rene Lisnard of France.
Alicia Molik is the only other Australian in action on day five of the championships.
She is up against an 24th seed Paola Suarez in a third-round match.
