Mills wins Euro title after 10-year wait
Sydney golfer Joanne Mills has claimed her second title on the Ladies European Tour with a final round 73 at a wind-torn Wales Ladies Championship of Europe at Machynys Peninsula.
It was ten years since she won the German Open and the 36-year-old admitted: "I can't believe it is so long and I never though it would take ten years to claim my second title. But it feels wonderful to have finally done it again."
Mills set out in a three-way tie for the final day lead with the English pair of Georgina Simpson and Rebecca Hudson, but coped best with the blustery and cold conditions.
Three ahead when she reached the turn in one under par 35, she dropped a couple of shots on the back nine but still finished on six under par 282, one ahead of Simpson (74) and German Bettina Hauert (71).
Hudson did not manage a birdie in a 76 and slipped back to sixth place.
"I played well all week," said Mills.
To be honest, I was really nervous all day. But I managed to grind out some good pars and held it together."
Mills is the third Australian to win on the Ladies European Tour this season.
Karrie Webb won the ANZ Ladies Masters and the Australian Open, while Nikki Garret is the Tenerife and Spanish Open Champion.
The win earned Mills STG52,500 ($A130,850) and a welcome boost as she prepares to try to regain her card for the LPGA Tour in America.
"I'm going out to the qualifying school and would love to have a few more seasons in the States," said the player who has been confined to Europe for the past couple of seasons.
"The European Tour has improved dramatically over recent years, but I am in the last half of my career and it would be nice to try and make some money quickly. America is the place to do it."
