Six Aussies gain 2007 European Tour card
Only six Australians have managed to hold onto their European Tour card for the 2007 season, one of the poorest representations in many years.
After the conclusion of last Sunday's Majorca Classic, the penultimate event on this year's European Tour schedule, there is now the danger of the Australian flag not being raised in victory on the Tour in a season for some time.
The six - Perth's Nick O'Hern and Brett Rumford, the Melbourne duo of Richard Green and Marcus Fraser and Sydney's Peter O'Malley and Canberra's Matthew Millar - are among the top-118 on the Order of Merit at the end of the Spanish event.
O'Hern is ranked 24th, Green 26th, Rumford 48th, O'Malley 49th, Fraser 65th and Millar who just managed to hold onto his card in his rookie year by three spots at 115th on the money list.
O'Hern, Green, Rumford and O'Malley will remain in Spain where they can still improve their ranking in this week's season-closing Volvo Masters that features the top-60 on the money list competing for euro 4 million in prize money.
O'Malley secured his place in the field after finishing fifth in Majorca and moving from 61st to 49th on the money list.
And unless either of the four succeed in winning the Volvo Masters, it will be the first year for some time the Australian flag will not be raised in victory on the Tour in a season.
Missing out on automatically retaining full playing rights is Sale's David Bransdon (124th), Adelaide's Wade Ormsby (133rd) and Sydney's Peter Fowler of Sydney (139th), a 24-year European Tour veteran.
The trio will have a chance to regain their card at next month's Qualifying School.
Also forfeiting Tour membership is Hope Island's Adam Scott who was taken off the money list as he will fall short by one in playing the mandatory 11 tournaments.
Five years ago, as many as 15 Australians enjoyed full membership rights in Europe including Peter Lonard and John Senden, both winners now on the US Tour.
The number of Australians to earn automatic 2007 European Tour membership is far less from the number currently enjoying similar status on the US Tour.
Nearly 20 Australians presently enjoy full US Tour membership status headed by reigning US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy along with triple-winning Mercedes Championship winning hero Stuart Appleby.
