Mills shines in Qld swimming titles
Pint-sized teenager Alice Mills put friendship on hold for a little over 25 seconds to win the hotly contested women's 50 metre freestyle final at the Queensland swimming titles.
Mills clocked a time of 25.31 seconds to relegate fellow Queenslanders Libby Lenton (25.51) and Jodie Henry (25.78) to the minor placings while veteran Sarah Ryan was fourth (26.08).
The 17-year-old Mills exploded off the blocks and was never headed as the star-studded pack made little impression on her lead.
Despite the friendship with her rivals, Mills said it was business as usual when she stepped on the blocks.
"We're all mates until we walk out. I don't care how much I like them when we are racing," Mills said.
"We are all friends after the race though."
She said the victory could provide a slight psychological advantage over her mates at the upcoming Olympic trials.
"I guess it could help a bit knowing I've got one up on them but anything could happen at the trials," Mills said.
"That was the fastest I've gone while I've been unrested so that's a good sign."
Olympic relay gold medallist Ashley Callus added the 50 metre freestyle crown in a time of 22.89 seconds to the gold medal he claimed in the 100 metre freestyle.
