Molik into second round at Wimbledon
Australia's Alicia Molik cruised into the second round at Wimbledon with a straight-sets victory over Anastasia Rodionova.
Molik, ranked No.75, beat the 69th-ranked Russian 6-3 6-2 in a rain-interrupted match.
The rain, which had delayed the start of the tournament for nearly three hours, returned when Molik's match was just four minutes old with the Australian leading one game to love and Rodionova up 30-0 in the second game.
When play resumed after about 90 minutes, Molik looked confident, converting her second break point in the fourth game and winning her next service game to love for a 4-1 lead.
The Russian right-hander saved a break point in the next game, but Molik went on to convert her third set point.
Molik broke her opponent again in the fifth game of the second set and, immediately after, Rodionova sought treatment on her right hand, where she already had her ring and middle fingers taped.
The Russian was visibly upset as Molik took a 4-2 lead and then broke her opponent again when Rodionova committed a double fault.
Serving for the match, Molik saved break point twice before sealing the win when Rodionova hit a forehand into the net.
Molik next meets No.7 seed Serena Williams.
The rain forced Australian number 27 seed Samantha Stosur to wait another day for her match against Kristina Brandi of Puerto Rico.
