Woodbridge misses out on double doubles
Todd Woodbridge let slip his chance to claim two Wimbledon titles in the one day when he and fellow Australian Alicia Molik lost the mixed doubles in a marathon three set thriller.
The Australians held six championship points in the second set tie break but lost them all, handing the second set to siblings Wayne and Cara Black from Zimbabwe, who also wrapped up the decider.
The Blacks won the final 3-6 7-6 (10-8) 6-4.
Had the Australians won, it would have been Woodbridge's 23rd grand slam crown.
Earlier, Woodbridge and his men's doubles partner Jonas Bjorkman defended their Wimbledon title with victory over Julian Knowle of Austria and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia.
Woodbridge, the most successful doubles player in history, and Swede Bjorkman triumphed 6-1 6-4 4-6 6-4 over the 16th seeds.
It was 33-year-old Woodbridge's ninth men's doubles title at Wimbledon, breaking the 100-year-old record of the Doherty brothers, Laurie and Reggie.
