Matera, 17, to join Gold Coast AFL club
Gold Coast have tapped into Western Australia's rich footballing pedigree, signing exciting youngster Brandon Matera to the club.
Matera, the son of former West Coast and Fitzroy player Wally Matera and nephew of Eagles greats Peter and Phil Matera, is one of the eligible 17-year-olds Gold Coast can recruit for the 2010 season under their draft concessions.
The fleet-footed forward pocket was named in this year's All-Australian Under-18 side and will join six other 17-year-olds and 10 young Queenslanders that have already been snapped up by the Gold Coast, who will compete in the VFL next year.
Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna, who has been appointed to lead the side into their inaugural AFL season in 2011, said he was thrilled to snare someone of Brandon's talent.
"Having played with his father and uncle it's great to have another Matera on the team," McKenna said.
"Brandon is a very balanced and smart footballer and his great vision and quick reactions will allow him to play a variety of roles.
"I'm delighted he has agreed to join us and he will be given every opportunity to develop into a first class AFL player under our program at Carrara."
