Brennan and Fraser join The Suns
The Gold Coast Suns gained some much needed height and versatility after recruiting Brisbane utility Jared Brennan and Collingwood ruckman Josh Fraser in a cocktail AFL trade and uncontracted signing deal on Thursday.
The Lions released Brennan to the Suns as an uncontracted player and in return will receive a compensatory pick from the AFL, which they will swap to Gold Coast in return for a higher selection.
Fraser also goes to Gold Coast as an uncontracted signing.
Brennan flagged several weeks ago he wanted a fresh start and the Suns and Carlton were bidding for his services until this deal was announced.
"I couldn't be more thrilled about the way things have turned out," Brennan said.
"I'm really looking forward to a fresh start, and to be able to further my career in Queensland is a real bonus. Its going to be an exciting time."
Gold Coast were only permitted to take one uncontracted player from each team - and they had already taken Lions midfielder Michael Rischitelli - unless the club agreed to a second signing.
Brennan, who was No.3 pick in the 2002 AFL National Draft, has played 117 for the Lions and is the ultimate utility, capable of playing in any position.
Fraser was the No.1 1999 AFL National Draft selection, but after 200 games with the Magpies his career there was on the wane.
He will fill a huge hole and be a mentor for raw Suns' ruckman Zac Smith.
Brennan and Fraser join Geelong star Gary Ablett, Rischitelli, Nathan Bock (Adelaide), Nathan Krakouer (Port Adelaide), Campbell Brown (Hawthorn) and Jarrod Harbrow (Western Bulldogs) as uncontracted signings.
Suns football manager Marcus Ashcroft said Brennan will bring flexibility, excitement and leadership to his new footballing home.
"Jared's a naturally gifted attacking player who can play anywhere on the field and having played and worked with him at the Lions I have seen first hand the professional approach he has to his training and football," Ashcroft said.
The Lions and Suns are expected to finalise the details of their trade pick exchange once the AFL has declared the draft compensation that Brisbane will receive for Brennan.
