Leuenberger rules out GWS defection
Greater Western Sydney's wily football operations manager Graeme Allan can forget about leaving his calling card for emerging Brisbane Lions ruck-forward Matthew Leuenberger.
The 22-year-old, who plays his 50th AFL match against Gold Coast on Saturday night, said he is staying in Brisbane and will not entertain moving.
Leuenberger has put off negotiating a new contract with Brisbane until the end of the season, but it had nothing to do with leaving the door open for Allan to poke his head in to discuss defecting to the Giants.
"I'm rapt here," Leuenberger told reporters on Wednesday.
The embattled Lions are yet to win a match this season and are wallowing at the bottom of the ladder.
Yet Leuenberger said all he can see are positives about the future and excitement in the band of merry young men that stand at his feet on match day waiting to be fed at ruck contests.
He said ripening stars Jack Redden, Tom Rockliff and Daniel Rich are just a few the Lions are building their future around.
"I haven't started contract negotiations so (we can) put that to bed," he said.
"Although where we are sitting on the ladder (last), you might say we are in trouble, but for me at the age that I am and with kids coming through like the Reddens, Rich and the Rockliffs, it's pretty exciting times for me.
"I've got no intentions of leaving that's for sure."
The Lions lost 2010 club champion Michael Rischitelli to the Gold Coast under specially-designed recruiting rules for out-of-contract players and Jared Brennan was traded for high draft picks.
GWS will have the same concessions the Suns had and Allan's been employed to deliver some big name signatures.
Rumoured to be on Allan's hit list are Geelong midfielder Jimmy Bartel, exciting Melbourne youngster Tom Scully and Collingwood's Dale Thomas.
