Coast win first local derby over Lions
A stirring final-quarter comeback by Gold Coast's young guns gave the AFL expansion club victory in their first ever local derby against the Brisbane Lions on Saturday.
Down by 30 points at the last change, the Coast kicked the final five goals to score a 10.15 (75) to 11.6 (72) victory over the Lions Reserves in the Gabba practice match.
Defender Jack Hutchins snapped the match-winner at the 20-minute mark of the final term to put Guy McKenna's side into the lead for the first time since the opening quarter.
Gold Coast, to open their VFL campaign against Port Melbourne on April 10 at Southport, rested a number of their most exciting youngsters while Nathan Ablett (ankle) was sidelined by injury.
They were plagued by inaccuracy in the second quarter when they kicked seven straight behinds.
The Lions, with James Polkinghorne and James Hawksley leading the way, jumped ahead after half-time to lead 11.5 (71) to 5.11 (41) at three-quarter time.
Brandon Matera, with two goals, and David Swallow were among the Coast's best.
