Lockyer confident he will play on Sunday
Brisbane captain Darren Lockyer was talking premierships on Tuesday after confirming he was on track for his third injury comeback against NRL strugglers the Bulldogs on Sunday.
Hours after his first appearance on the training paddock in more than a month, Lockyer was named by Broncos coach Wayne Bennett along with halfback Peter Wallace (groin), who is also on the comeback trail.
"The verdict at the moment is I'm playing unless there's a major hiccup between now and Sunday," said Lockyer, admitting to nerves before his first training run.
"It was wet .... but yeah it was good.
"I was a bit nervous coming to training but I needed to get out there and do that sort of thing for my confidence.
"Hopefully as the week progresses it will just continue building more and more."
Lockyer admitted his two failed attempts to get back playing following off-season knee surgery had taken a toll on him mentally.
"It's been a frustrating time. The whole thing has been mentally draining at times," he said.
"But now I'm feeling refreshed, like I've had a bit of a holiday and I'm keen to get out and play some footy again."
Lockyer, confident he'd taken the right course of action after pushing his comeback too hard previously, said getting his combinations right with Wallace and hooker Michael Ennis could take time.
"Right now I'm confident I've put it all behind men," said Lockyer after he ran pain free on a wet and greasy Red Hill ground.
"It (knee) felt good.
"The leg strength still probably has a little way to go to be back to 100 per cent but I'm not having any of the discomfort that was giving me grief earlier in the year and it doesn't feel like it will be back."
Lockyer said the fact the Broncos had emerged from their annual Origin period to be just seven points behind the NRL leaders meant the opportunity was still there for the club to do something special.
"We've held up really well throughout the origin series," he said.
"Once Justin (Hodges) comes back from suspension (in two weeks), the rest of the squad should be pretty fit and we should have a team I believe can really press for a premiership."
Prop Nick Kenny failed to train again Tuesday, increasing concerns his sprained ankle could force him out of Sunday's game at Suncorp Stadium against the Dogs, whose premiership odds hit 1000-1 on Tuesday after their loss to the Rabbits on Monday night.
Meanwhile the injury-blitzed Titans have been forced to make several changes with young winger Jordan Rapana making his debut for Brent Bowen (fractured cheek).
Coach John Cartwright has also called on Ipswich Queensland Cup centre Gavin Cooper to replace Luke O'Dwyer in the centres with Kyogle Turkeys junior Will Matthews making his starting debut in the second-row alongside Anthony Leffranchi for injured forward Mark Minichiello (ankle).
On the bench Matt Cross has been promoted from Tweed Heads along with lightning speedster Shannon Walker who completes Cartwright's 17-man squad to play the Roosters.
