Wallaby gets assault charge summons: report
Wallabies flanker George Smith could miss next month's rugby union Test match against the Springboks in South Africa after being summonsed to defend an assault charge in an ACT court, according to an ABC report.
The assault charge relates to an alleged fight outside a Canberra nightclub in March.
Police attended the scene and a man was taken to hospital with facial injuries.
Smith has been summonsed to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on July 11 - the day before the Wallabies are due to play the Springboks in South Africa.
But Australian Rugby Union spokesman Strath Gordon told the ABC Smith may not have to attend court on that date and could still make the Test.
"While this matter is pending obviously, as I said, there's no legal prohibition and he should be available for selection," said Gordon.
The 22-year-old will also be the subject of an ACT Brumbies disciplinary hearing pending the outcome of the case.
