Jacobs cleared of umpire contact
Hawthorn defender Danny Jacobs has been cleared of a charge of making negligent contact with an umpire, with the umpire backing the player's view that no contact was made.
Umpire Dean Margetts told the tribunal he was surprised Jacobs was cited at all and his initial reaction when told about the report was that the AFL might have made a mistake.
"I said I think you might have the wrong man as far as the contact goes," Margetts told the tribunal.
Margetts said the only contact he was aware of was from Kangaroos player Daniel Wells, who knocked him off his feet during the second quarter of Sunday's match at Telstra Dome and later apologised.
Tribunal counsel Andrew Tinney said video footage indicated that earlier contact from Jacobs had pushed Margetts into Wells' path.
But Jacobs denied touching Margetts at all and the umpire also said he did not feel any contact from the Hawks veteran.
"Initially when I was contacted they suggested player Danny Jacobs from Hawthorn was cited ... and I was a little bit surprised," he said.
It was the only case heard on Tuesday, with three players to appear before the tribunal on Wednesday night on more serious charges.
Fremantle's Des Headland is risking a six-match suspension by fighting two striking charges, both involving West Coast's Adam Selwood, along with a charge of wrestling Selwood which would attract a fine.
Selwood will contest a charge of using insulting language towards Headland.
Fremantle's Josh Carr is fighting a charge of striking West Coast's Daniel Chick, which carries a potential three-match suspension.
The only player suspended so far is St Kilda's Fraser Gehrig, who will miss Saturday's Telstra Dome clash with Essendon after submitting an early guilty plea to striking the Western Bulldogs' Brian Harris.
