Glory, Sharks grand final looming
The 2003 national soccer league grand final is rapidly looming as replay of last year's model as Perth Glory and the Olympic Sharks continue to power ahead in the finals race.
Table topping Glory (21 points) were clearly the most impressive after round seven action and are headed for a home finale after dispatching Parramatta 6-1 at Perth Oval on Saturday night.
The Sharks (16 points) have also hit their straps, registering a 3-0 win over Northern Spirit on Sunday to cement second spot.
Adelaide City (13 points) stayed in the hunt with a scrappy 1-0 away win against Newcastle but the stern test comes on Friday when they play the rampaging Glory at Hindmarsh.
A loss for Adelaide, coupled with an expected three points for the Sharks when they play struggling Newcastle United (1 point) at Toyota Park next Monday, will just about confirm the two grand finalists.
Bobby Despotovski scored a treble and Damian Mori a double as the Glory more than made up for Power's surprise 2-1 win in round two of the finals series.
The Power's (11 points) defence was badly exposed against Perth and a significant improvement will be needed against the Spirit at Parramatta Stadium next week to stay in grand final contention.
Glory's strike duo put four goals past Power keeper Liam Reddy in the second half barrage with Despotovski registering his 11th goal of the finals campaign.
It continued the Glory's post-season goal-fest making it 24 goals from seven matches with the West Australian club conceding only five.
It wasn't quite as pretty but the result was the same when the Sharks put the sword to Spirit's plucky finals campaign at Brookvale Oval.
