Farina wants more games before Athens
The Olyroos may have secured a spot at the Olympic Games but coach Frank Farina has warned Australia's success at the tournament is in jeopardy unless preparations improve.
The Australian under 23 soccer team was given a brief scare by New Zealand in the return leg of the Oceania qualifying playoff but held on for a one-all draw to earn a Games berth.
A 2-0 win in Sydney on Monday meant the visitors won the series 3-1.
Farina said his side did not play as well as it could, trailing 1-0 at North Harbour Stadium before effectively ending the match with an away goal.
"I'm not real happy with the way we responded at certain times in the game but that's to be expected, there's been a very, very limited preparation," Farina said.
"We're going to try and get as many games as we can with the squad going into August.
"They came into this tournament under prepared. We don't want to make that mistake going into Athens."
The Australians had been widely criticised for sub standard play during the tournament but Farina thought it was unjust given the under 23 team had played just three internationals in three years before the Oceania qualifiers.
Now Farina faces problems securing enough practice for much of his team, with the National Soccer League season finishing in five weeks.
"It's going to be difficult from March - no football in March, April, May, June, July - so we're going to have to do something in training camps and games," he said.
