Maloney strike moves Power closer to six

Brad Maloney continued to steer Parramatta's national soccer league revival with a superb performance in the Power's 1-0 win over Wollongong at Parramatta Stadium on Sunday night.

Maloney was in everything and scored the winner in the 55th minute.

Since his return to the Power first grade side, former Perth Glory midfielder Maloney has scored two goals in three games and lifted his side to within one point of the top six.

That situation could dramatically improve if Power is awarded three points when the Glory face the NSL tribunal next month on a charge of fielding an unregistered player in the opening round of the season.

Parramatta looked to be heading to victory before striker Ray Younis was sent off for head-butting in the 61st minute.

At that stage, the Power had the game well in control but the Wolves surged, especially in the last ten minutes, to give the home side a few nervous moments.

Parramatta was aided by the fact the Wolves went into the game without six regular first graders missing through injury, suspension or international duty.

Power assistant coach Manfred Schaefer heaped praise on Maloney and suggested his form would only get better as his match fitness improved.

"We all know what Brad is capable of and he's already started to show that in the three games he's played," Schaefer said.

"With each game he's lasted longer. It was 88 minutes, hopefully next week it'll be 90."

Wolves coach Ron Corry said he was happy with the way his patched-up side battled against a star-studded opposition.

Corry freely admitted his tactics were to sit back and hope to grab a point from a scoreless draw but one superb strike from Maloney cruelled those plans.
