Taipans close in on finals berth
Cairns took another step towards an elusive maiden National Basketball League finals berth with a 116-97 win over Townsville on Sunday night at the Cairns Convention Centre.
For the home side, Marcus Timmons finished with a game-high 35 points and was well supported by Anthony Stewart (24) and Brad Davidson (20).
Veteran Robert Rose bagged 28 points for Townsville (14-17 win-loss record) while teammate Peter Crawford scored 13 points.
Cairns coach Guy Molloy said his club had the best home run into the finals compared to its rivals, with games against Victoria and West Sydney to come.
Victories over both teams would give the Taipans a cherished sixth place regular season finish and a sudden death home final.
"I've been saying it for a long time, we have as good or better run than most," Molloy said.
"I don't get in to `what-if' scenarios. We just have to keep winning to finish as high as possible.
"It's time for the players to play because we would love a home play-off."
Molloy was confident the Crocs - who led 50-46 at halftime - would tire following their draining 95-90 home loss to Wollongong less than 24 hours ago.
"I thought we would come to terms with them in third quarter," said Molloy.
